Las Tunas: A Fertile Ground for Tourism

Eastern Cuba, faithful exponent of natural, historical and cultural values for tourism, adds new spaces dedicated to the leisure industry, with a view to benefit from the growing flow of tourists.

In that environment, the province of Las Tunas stands as a new part in the Cuban tourism sector, with 265 kilometers of coastline where there are about 35 virgin beaches of excellent quality, complemented by crystal-clear waters, coral reefs and white sands.

The incursion of the region in the entertainment industry occurs after several centuries of oriented sugar industry and livestock care, to which the recent steps to the steel industry with the installation of one of the most modern plants in the country are added.

In the province, the presence of the city of Puerto Padre outstands, which began to be occupied around 1869 and was the scene of major military events during the Ten Years' War for the independence of Cuba (1868-1878).

As a singular element, its seafront is one of the few freshwater springs on the island that flows into the sea, which gives it a touch of distinction for visitors who flock to the place.

Called by many the Blue Village or the City of Mills, it has an area of 180,000 square kilometers and already in the 16th century it appeared on maps of the New World under the name of Portus Patris.

Between the 16th and 17th centuries, economic activity in the area was scarce and only after 1800 the dock known as Pier Maniabón was built, becoming in 1860 the first sugar mill in the territory.

In the first half of the 20th century, Puerto Padre benefited from an intense cultural activity, marked by the appearance of more than four dozen newspapers and magazines, among which are El Localista, El Noticiero, Madrugada and Alborada Villazulina.

That way, renowned institutions also started operating, such as the bookstore La Premiere, Cucalambé printing, the movie theater, the Municipal Concert Band, the Aldana Theater – later called Rivoli – joined by sculptural pieces like the Statue of Liberty and a bust dedicated to mothers.

Tourism also includes hunting and nature-oriented vacation industry, together with the mineral waters of the municipality of Jesus Menendez and facilities for the practice of forests potholing.

In the cultural agenda, the Jornada Cucalambeana -in tribute to the poet Juan Cristobal Napoles Fajardo "El Cucalambe"- highlights, in addition to having a provincial capital called “the sculptures” city.

Birding also has its place in the Bay of Malagueta, one of the four existing in the territory, where interested parties can study various species, among which are ducks, pelicans and pink flamingos.
