Havana: A Wonder City in the Caribbean

The Cuban capital, included among the seven wonders cities of the world, provides tourism with a mix of proposals ranging from the traditional sun and beach to those aimed at specific segments of visitors.

Former village of San Cristobal de La Habana, is one of the most faithful exponents of the colonial architecture of the island, marked by a notoriety that began from the late 16th century, with its own characteristics but with a strong Iberian influence.

At that time it was also called the Fortress City of the West Indies and the Key to the New World, now it represents a unique living museum of diverse architectural styles, reflecting the developmental stages through which the historic city went through.

The city is built on a mix of architectural styles covering the Renaissance, art deco, Moorish, baroque, neoclassicism, eclecticism, art nouveau and Cuban baroque, besides being the center of the country´s cultural landscape.

It hosts some three dozen museums, 10 art galleries, 25 theaters and unique institutions such as the National Ballet of Cuba and the Casa de Las Americas endorse that position, and also serves as headquarter for numerous international film festivals, dance, plastic arts and literature, among other manifestations.

For those who opt for an encounter with traditional Cuban rhythms -among them the Son, Danzon, Bolero and Cha Cha Cha- have at their disposal spaces like the Habana Café, Pico Blanco and night clubs of the importance of Copa Room , Parisien and the world famous Tropicana cabaret, with its renowned Under the Stars Hall.

The capital is also the scene of unique works as the Capitol of Havana, considered by specialists among the six most relevant palaces worldwide.

Among the treasures of the installation is the statue that symbolizes the Republic, sculpted by Italian Angelo Zanelli and imposes the respect that grants being the third of the world's largest indoor sculpture.

Then there is the neighborhood of El Vedado, the heart of the capital, which takes its name from the existing prohibitions in the 16th century to open roads in that impenetrable and forested area, hindering any hostile access to the village of San Cristobal de La Havana.

The main area of Vedado is La Rampa, five blocks covering among its attractions the famous Hotel Nacional, built on a terrace witch in colonial times was a strategic military enclave, as well as the Habana Libre.

Its system of fortresses, with the emblematic Castle of Los Tres Reyes del Morro, spanned nine large buildings to form -according to the experts- the most remarkable set of its kind in Spanish America.

Among these works, the Castillo de la Real Fuerza (completed around 1577) led the way on the continent Renaissance design in military buildings, with a style that prevailed in Spain in times of the Catholic Monarchs and was also called Elizabethan.
