Cuba: Virtuosity in the Caribbean

The Cuban archipelago, which offers one-of-a-kind beach and sun options, has regions where the virtuosity of the sea contributes the necessary elements to attract thousands of visitors every year.

Cuba's privileged geographic location allows vacationers to visit more than 200 beaches of warm crystal-clear water, in addition to long sand strips.

In that environment, the world-famous coastal resort of Varadero, where the first families settled in 1887, stands out in the western Matanzas province.

Two dozen of kilometers of excellent beaches surrounded by natural attractions such as caves, pristine keys and crystal-clear water are complemented by a large hotel infrastructure that can meet the demands of tourists.

According to experts, Varadero's seabed has more than 40 kinds of corals, a broad diversity of fish, lobsters, shrimps, crabs, turtles and 70 species of mollusks.

In addition, investments are made in the tourist infrastructure, like the Hotel Internacional, which will offer 934 rooms in eight stories.

Construction plans include two hotels, Ola 1 and Ola 2, in the zone known as Oasis, which will offer more than 1,000 rooms altogether, and the 564-room Hotel Las Nubes, which will be built between the hotels Brisas del Caribe and Naviti. The latter will be the tallest building in the coastal resort with 24 stories.

A fourth hotel, Cayo Buba, will be constructed on Cayo Libertad, which will be connected to mainland by a causeway (a road over the sea).

Marinas like Chapelin, Puertosol Dársena de Varadero and Gaviota guarantee the conditions and means for vacationers to practice scuba diving and snorkeling, and provide the appropriate vessels, a trained staff, diving centers, hyperbaric chambers and transportation in case of an emergency.

Diving is a major activity in Hoyo Azul Ojo del Mégano, a huge cavern that is 70 meters in diameter with underwater walls, coral reefs and huge schools of multicolor fish.

Nature proudly exhibits more than 300 hectares in Punta de Hicacos with aboriginal pictographs in Cueva de Abrosio (Ambrosio's Cave) and the ruins of the Saltworks La Calavera, which is considered the first saltworks exploited in the Americas by the Spanish conquistadors.

Moreover, in addition to its sun and beach offers, Varadero has an International Parachuting Center and the Varadero Golf Club, which is the first 18-hole par 72 professional golf course in Cuba.
