Cuba: Circuits for Tourism

Cuba, a traditional sun and beach destination in the Caribbean region, promotes various options that complement the expansion strategy of the leisure industry.

Dozens of kilometers of excellent beaches, warm waters and white sands are now accompanied by tours of the island, with a view to take advantage of existing conditions.

It is worth mentioning that the circuits result as one of the products of excellence among the tourist companies that operate in the country, thereby contributing to diversifying tourism.

In this regard, there are two dozen traditional or specialized, stable and serialized offers and even tailor-made short- or long-term programs to meet the demands from clients, with or without a minimum of passengers.

For its design, several factors are taken into account, including the characteristics of the tourist destinations and domestic land transportation facilities through a road infrastructure that connects the entire territory and the keys.

Coupled with this, boarding points and air and maritime entry routes that cover the entire archipelago are included, thus favoring internal movements.

In addition, the country has three cruise terminals (in Havana, Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba), 12 international marinas and 20 airports, 10 of which are international terminals.

As an additional element, the archipelago holds 12 world heritage sites declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) – seven cultural, two natural and three intangible sites – and six Biosphere reserves.

For circuits, a tourist infrastructure with more than 350 hotels and 68,000 rooms is used, complemented by about 24,000 rooms in the private sector.

Add to this the options of mobile homes or campers, because Cuba is ideal as that tourist variant.

Havana, Viñales, Cienaga de Zapata (Zapata Swamp), Cienfuegos, Trinidad, Santa Clara and Cayo Coco are the destinations often visited by campers, in a project in which an operative base will be opened in Santiago de Cuba.

In this way, the circuits combine sun and beach tourism with nature, culture and cities, as well as sites of historic, cultural and economic interest.

In the total of proposed circuits, at least 10 combine the modalities of city, nature and sun and beach, seven others involved cities and nature; and four include cities and sun and beach options.

Moreover, by its extension, five circuits include the entire country; two develop in the eastern zone and one in the west and center.

More than twenty Cuban tourist destinations, which cover all 15 provinces, both on the main island and the northern keys, are covered by these circuits.

In this area stands the heritage cities of Havana, Trinidad, Cienfuegos and Santa Clara, which group about 50 percent of the country's hotel rooms.
