Eastern Cuba Boosts Apiculture
Monday, February 13, 2006

Havana.- Apiculture in the eastern Cuban province of Granma has reported an increase in honey production.

According to preliminary statistics, the province produced 128 tons of bee honey during the first month of 2006, and reported an average yield of 75 kilograms per beehive.

Experts recalled that the previous record for January was 80.8 tons and was set in 2003.

They added that several plant species flowered after heavy rainfalls during the last trimester of 2005, thus contributing to the recuperation of beehives.

In addition, 90 tons of ecological honey, which is highly demanded and highly quoted in the international market, were exported.

This year, Granma is expected to produce 850 tons of bee honey and 8,000 queen bees to improve beehives genetically with more productive and resistant specimens.
