Treatment against Sclerosis in Cuba
Monday, March 6, 2006

Havana.- Health services in the central Cuban province of Sancti Spiritus are implementing a nationwide project to treat patients suffering from multiple sclerosis.

The service is being provided at the Faustino Pérez Hospital, in conjunction with the Havana-based International Neurological Restoration Center.

The Faustino Pérez Hospital, the only institution outside Havana that provides that kind of rehabilitation, is staffed by highly trained professionals and equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

Patients from several provinces benefit from that service, which includes mechanic therapy, breathing, aerobic and relaxation exercises, and cognitive recognition, as well as the application of Asian medicine, especially Chinese traditional medicine.

Some 3,000 Cubans suffer from multiple sclerosis, which causes sensitive, visual and vesicular alterations, loss of muscular strength, urinary incontinence and loss of balance, concentration and memory, among other symptoms.
