Cuba Works on Renewable Energy Program
Monday, April 30, 2007

Havana.- Cuba's economy is boosting the development of renewable energy programs to meet the growing demand from the country's industry.

In that regard, authorities are building a plant in the eastern province of Ciego de Avila to produce biogas from wastes from the sugarcane industry.

The project, sponsored by a German nongovernmental organization, is aimed at producing methane from the wastes of a distillery.

The new technology will prevent discarding such wastes, which are highly contaminant, on the land.

More than 100 small- and medium-size Cuban facilities use renewable fuels obtained from organic wastes such as manure or plant wastes, especially for cooking.

Biogas is obtained from decomposition in an anaerobic (without oxygen) environment and is an economical carburant that can even be used as fuel for vehicles.
