Health Education in Cuba
Monday, August 27, 2007

Havana.- Cuba is carrying out several initiatives to educate people suffering from chronic diseases who need rehabilitation.

One of those projects is the Asthmatic Children's Camp in eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, where more than 1,000 patients have been trained on how to take care of their health.

The project is aimed at increasing the patient's perception of their disease, its risk factors and the ways to reduce crises and other symptoms.

The camp is staffed by pulmonologists and other physicians, who teach relaxation techniques, respiratory exercises and diving to hundreds of children every summer. The children also receive thermotherapy and musical therapy.

Patients are taught how to live with their disease instead of living for their disease. That contributes to improving their quality of life and allows them to participate actively in society.
