Cuban Medical Technology Benefits Other Countries
Monday, September 10, 2007

Havana.- The Cuban technology known as SUMA is used in laboratories in other countries to diagnose congenital malformations.

According to sources from the health sector, 578 pieces of SUMA equipment are in use abroad, including 11 in China and the rest in Latin American countries such as Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia and Argentina.

Over the past 25 years, more than 51 million tests have been made in Cuba using the Ultramicroanalytical System (SUMA in Spanish), created at the Immune-essay Center.

Pregnant women are tested to detect congenital malformations, hepatitis B and HIV/AIDS.

So far, the Blood Certification Program has prevented the transmission of HIV/AIDS in at least 822 cases, hepatitis B in 31,381 cases, and hepatitis C in 26,967 cases.
