Cuba Bets on Ecological Coffee
Monday, December 24, 2007

Havana.- The Cuban eastern province of Guantánamo is boosting production of ecological coffee to meet the growing demand for that product on the international market.

According to experts, local farmers have already produced 100 tons of coffee, which is cropped following strict ecological standards.

Producers fulfilled this year's plan, despite serious damage caused by heavy rains that hit the eastern part of the country over the past three months.

The German agency BCS OKO GARANTIE is inspecting production of ecological coffee in Guantánamo to certify its quality.

BCS OKO GARANTIE is among the international agencies authorized to certify the quality of ecological crops.

In order to get a quality certificate, coffee has to be cropped using internationally-recognized ecological techniques to kill plagues and prevent diseases without using chemicals.
