Carnivals in Havana
Monday, June 16, 2008

Havana.- The Cuban capital will host carnivals, which are among the most famous such festivities in the country and are scheduled from August 1-10.

According to sources from the organizing committee, the carnivals will be dedicated to several dance groups, including El Alacrán and Componedores de Batea, which will celebrate their 100th anniversary. Another group, La Jardinera, will celebrate its 70th anniversary.

The program includes parades by dance groups and floats, and people will be able to dance at the end of the show every night.

During Havana's 2008 Carnival, all seven traditional dance groups and six contemporary dance companies will compete for the Chano Pozo Grand Award and other prizes granted by the Jury, the audience and several institutions.

The organizing committee said foreign groups have been invited to participate, including those from the Carnivals of Veracruz (Mexico), Cadiz (Spain) and Martinique.
