Eastern Cuban Coffee Ripens Rapidly
Monday, September 8, 2008

Havana.- Coffee growing in areas of the Sierra Maestra mountain range, in the eastern Cuban province of Granma, has ripened quickly.

According to experts, heavy rains caused by hurricanes that have affected the region and high temperature have sped up the ripening process.

Due to that, local agricultural authorities declared an emergency to speed up the coffee harvest, the region's major export product, which is highly demanded on the international market.

In order to collect as much grains as possible, 12,000 people will be mobilized during the current coffee harvest.

Brigades of retired workers and jobless people, as well as students, agricultural workers and employees from the public sector, have been set up to achieve that goal.
