Cuban Ophthalmological Center Excels
Monday, June 8, 2009

Havana.- Doctors at the Ophthalmological Center in the central Cuban province of Sancti Spiritus, founded two years ago, performed the first cornea transplant.

The surgery benefited a young man who suffered from an ulcer that could not be cured with traditional treatments.

The patient was discharged from hospital 24 hours after surgery, although he will be followed up for two years to prevent rejection of the donated organ.

Doctors at the center, which was inaugurated in December 2007, has performed more than 1,200 surgeries to treat cataracts, glaucoma and pterigium.

The institution is equipped with excímer laser equipment, which has allowed doctors to perform 300 surgeries to correct refractive defects in less than a year.
