Tourism to Shrink in 2009
Monday, July 13, 2009

Madrid.- The International Tourism Organization (ITO) estimated that tourism would decrease 4-6 percent in 2009.

Previously, the ITO had estimated that tourism would shrink about 2 percent.

According to the international organization, world tourism reached 247 million travelers during the first four months of 2009, accounting for an 8-percent decrease in contrast to the same period last year.

However, the ITO predicted that the decrease would be lower in late 2009, ranging from 3 to 5 percent.

Statistics from May on must show an adverse scenario, due to the negative effects of the A (H1N1) pandemic and the global economic crisis on the tourist industry.
