Experts Predict Slowdown in Costa Rican Tourism Sector
Monday, August 31, 2009

San José.- Costa Rica's tourism sector is expected shrink 12 percent this year, compared to 2008.

According to the National Chamber of Tourism, tourist arrivals will drop this year, compared to 2.1 million vacationers who visited the country in 2008.

Officials pointed out that predictions are better than results during the first semester of this year, when the tourism sector shrank 15 percent, due to the global economic crisis.

From January to June 2009, the number of tourists from the United States dropped 13 percent, while those from Mexico decreased 23 percent.

The recovery of the tourism sector might be boosted by the new administration of Costa Rica's major airport, which is being run by the US company Houston Airport System.
