Cuban Ophthalmologists Use Acupuncture
Monday, December 21, 2009

Havana.- Experts from the Ophthalmological Center of Santiago de Cuba, in the eastern province of the same name, are administering anesthesia with the use of acupuncture.

According to the experts, this year, some 200 patients have benefited from this method, which was first used in the province in 2009.

Needles are placed in specific points in the patients' face before transferring them to the operating room, where doctors and nurses start the procedure using an electrical stimulator.

Acupuncture is safer during surgery, as the patients' eye pressure drops and inflammation is minor.

The procedure also prevents ischemia of the optical nerve, reduces the doctor's manipulation of the eye and speeds up postoperative recovery.
