A 17th century construction, the Church and Convent of St. Augustine or St. Francis the New were thoroughly reformed in 1925 and 1947. The Augustine’s resided here until in 1842 when the church was transferred to the Third Order of St. Francis and in 1844 to the Franciscan friars of the First Order. Its style has great Mexican influence as it was me headquarters of the Augustine Order. Still standing are a beautiful altarpiece by Miguel Consistre, the dome decoration and the glasswork. From 1818 to 1856 it was the seat of the Painting and Drawing Academy. The church keeps providing services. |
