Description |
This monument was built in 1982 in tribute to the Royal and Pontifical University of San Jerónimo de La Habana, founded on January 5, 1728 on the site where the Convert of San Juan de Letrán of the Order of Santo Domingo stood. The Dominicans ruled it until the secularization laws of 1841. The University, which had secular nature, remained here up to 1902, when the institution moved to its current headquarters in the neighborhood of Vedado. The Convent of San Juan de Letrán was demolished in 1957 to be replaced by a helicopter terminal on top of the modern building that stands today behind the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales. |
