This was the first museum to have been opened in Cuba-in 1899, by Emilio Bacardí. It contains valuable artifacts of pre-Columbian culture, samples of national art and exhibits related to Cuban history. These last include a swallow-tail coat that belonged to José Martí, Cuba's national hero, and personal effects which belonged to Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, the Father of his Country. Two mummies that belong to the Paraca culture and other Egypcean cultures. Another unique piece exhibited in the museum is the torpedo made by the Mambises by using traditional methods in order to destroy the Spanish ships during the independence war of the 19th century.
